Championship Night at MRP

9-18-15 - Williamsburg, OH - With 96 cars on hand there was fast and furious racing action in all divisions!  Championship night at MRP had an extra feel to it as the Sport Mods and Freedom 4 divisions each had a special race to makeup. The evening started out with Diamond Cut Lawn Care Dash events for non-winners in 2015 and it was Frank King taking the win for the Tarvin Auto Service Freedom 4's while it was Graylin Prince taking the dash win in the Late Model Division.

The Tarvin Auto Service Freedom 4's were the first class to start the night as they were racing for $300 to win and it was heat race winner Joey Wykoff out front at the green flag of the 15 lap event with 2015 Track Champion Sean Jones in close pursuit from his 4th starting spot. Wykoff would lead until lap 10 when Jones would get around him and set sail to claim his 7th feature win of the season in his Barber Bros Automotive, Hudepohl Heating and Air, Jim Holden Financial, Mark Shinkle All Basement Waterproofing sponsored machine. Wykoff would come home in second with Kyle Tarvin, Eric Weaver, and Dustyn Fisher completing the top five spots. Fisher was also victorious in a heat race.

The Diamond Cut Lawn Care Sport Mod Division was up next and it was a veteran driver temporarily filling in that would start from the outside pole and go on to lead the entire 15 lap feature event and take home the trophy and $300 prize money as the winner. Spencer Watson of Blanchester was called to fill in for Daryl Phelps in the CCLS Trucking, Badfast Chassis machine and he would drive the machine to victory lane for his first victory at MRP in quite some time. Mitchell Fields Jr would put pressure on Watson but would come up just inches short at the finish line. Fields would later be DQ'd for failing to allow tech inspection on his engine moving Chris Shelton Jr to second spot with Bert Crawford, Glen Keaton, and Andy Trout completing the top five spots. Watson and Shelton were heat race winners, Andy Trout would be crowned the 2015 Track Champion.

The Late Models were up next and they put on a fantastic feature event. At the drop of the green flag it was 2015 Track Champion John Whitney Jr jumping to the lead ahead of Mike Meyers. By lap 3 it was Roger Ruark on the move up to second but most eyes were on last place starter Bill Sheets who arrived late to the racetrack due to engine issues and would have problems coming out for his heat race.  So at the drop of the green flag it was his first laps at speed all night and he was charging through the field towards the front. At the front it was Whitney and Ruark battling hard for the top spot and coming through lap traffic. A caution on lap 13 for a spinning Tom Collini would be what Sheets needed as he was up to 3rd spot but nearly a half lap behind. With the yellow waving it was now a 3 car battle for the win. Whitney would again get a good restart but Ruark was looking high and low for a way around as he and Sheets would trade the second spot numerous times following the restart. Lap 20 would see Bill Sheets get past both Ruark and Whitney and take over the top position and set sail for his second consecutive win in his is family run machine. Ruark would come home in second with Whitney, Meyers, and Graylin Prince completing the top five spots.

A field of 26 Matt's Graphics UMP Modifieds were on hand and it was Patrick Alcorn, Brian Scaggs, and Dave Jameson taking heat race wins while Larry Pickelheimer Jr would take the checkers in the B-main event. At the drop of the green flag of the 20 lap feature event it was Alcorn out front but the pace would be slowed by numerous cautions early in the event. By lap 5 it was evident that 12th starting Adam Stricker (who was looking to claim his second straight championship in the Modifieds) and 17th starting Jimmy Lennex Jr were the cars on the move as they had worked their way into the top five positions. Meanwhile the Cohen Recycling, Ashley Motorsports #1 of Ryan Morton had gotten past Alcorn and was the new leader. By lap 10 Stricker had worked his way to second spot but Morton was determined to keep his car out front and he did as the Middletown,Ohio driver would lead the final 15 laps to claim his first win of the 2015 race season at MRP. Stricker would come home in second spot and claim the 2015 championship over Pickelheimer. Lennex would come home in a close 3rd spot with Scaggs, and Alcorn completing the top five positions.

The final event of the evening would see the DRC.net Crazy Compacts in action and it was Burlington, Ky driver Justin Dalton taking the lead early in his Dalton Property Maintenance sponsored machine and holding off 2015 Track Champion Jason Borgenmenke to take the win. Jerry Gibson III would claim third spot with Willie Butler and Chris Shelton Sr completing the top five positions. Dalton and Kevin Stamper were heat race winners.
