Kids Night at MRP

The beginning of a new school year also brings MRP’s annual kids night with footraces on the front stretch at intermission for all the children in attendance but it was the Late Model division kicking off the night’s racing action with two preliminary heats.

In heat 1 Roger Ruark of Flemingsburg KY would lead every lap but the last one as Kody Evans’ 4G machine would sneak by in traffic to claim the win. Heat 2 would see Sardinia’s Blake Naylor claim his second heat win of the season and set the starting lineup for the A-Main. In the feature event Evans jumped out to an early lead over Steve Casebolt and never looked back as the young Camden Ohio driver led all 25 laps en route to becoming the first Late Model driver to win multiple features at MRP in 2017. Casebolt would come home second followed by Craig Wolford of St. Louisville OH in his first visit of 2017, Vanceburg KY driver Larry Martin Jr., and Ruark completing the top 5.

The sport modifieds would take the track next and Spensor Watson would overtake Tom Pribble for the lead halfway through heat 1 to claim the pole for the A-Main. Heat 2 would see long time Chevette driver Mike Clark claim his first victory in his new division. In the feature it was “The Sledgehammer” Spensor Watson dropping the hammer on the rest of the field leading every lap and claiming his first victory of the season in the CCLS Trucking, Truesdell Farms sponsored number 20 machine. Batavia’s Matt Watson would finish second in his second race in the Sport Mod division followed by New Richmond’s Jason Manning, and local Mt. Orab drivers Dan Hurt and Casey Phelps rounding out the top 5.

The UMP modifieds boasted a solid field of 18 cars with several newcomers to the speedway from as far away as North Carolina. In heat 1 it was Jeff Surber of Jamestown Ohio out front with Lima’s Tony Anderson and local favorite John “Weasel” Rhoades battling for the lead but on the last lap Surber and Rhoades would make contact sending both cars to the pits leaving Anderson to take the win. In heat 2 it was the modified division’s winningest driver of 2017 Batavia’s Adam Stricker followed by points leader Maysville KY’s Jimmy Lennex Jr. In the feature it was all “The Highside Kid” Adam Stricker living up to his nickname as he jumped out front leading every lap to sweep the night for his 4th victory of the season. Lennex would come home 2nd and maintain the points lead with Anderson 3rd, local teen Caleb “Boog” Verdon 4th and newcomer Jeff Watson making up the top 5.

The Crazy Compacts would close out the night’s action and heat one saw Mt. Orab’s own Clyde Pack take the checkers in heat 1. Heat 2 and outside pole for the feature was claimed by Compact point leader Brandon Stephens still searching for his first feature win. In the A-Main the Dry Ridge KY driver would not be denied leading all 15 laps to find victory lane for the 1st time in his career at MRP. Justin Dalton would finish 2nd followed by Pack, Lynchburg’s Jason Borgemenke and Aberdeen’s Ashley Logan.
