7-14-17 FAN APPRECIATION NIGHT at Moler Raceway Park
7-14-17 - Williamsburg, OH - Fan Appreciation Night at Moler Raceway Park Mother nature finally cooperated with MRP as rains cleared out of the area before the drop of the green and fans were treated to great night of racing action and the chance to meet the drivers for an autograph session on the front stretch during intermission. The Super Late Model division would kick things off with Winchester Ohio driver Nick Latham winning his heat and Indiana native Joe Godsey with the Roth Motorsports team from Bentonville Arkansas winning his heat to set the stage for the 25-lap main event. In the A-Main it was Godsey jumping out to an early lead with Latham in hot pursuit as he held off Godsey’s teammate Jeff Roth for 2nd. A caution with 10 laps to go would bunch the field back up for a restart and Godsey would again jump to the lead but Latham would overtake him and lead the final 5 laps enroute to his 2nd career victory at MRP. Godsey would fade to 4th at the end with Kody Evans and defending track champion John Whitney Jr. overtaking him for 2nd and 3rd respectively after they both navigated through the entire field from starting on the tail. Roger Ruark of Flemingsburg, Kentucky would round out the top 5. It was a wild night in the Diamond Cut Lawn Care Sport Modified division as numerous cautions in the A-Main would slow the race and see only 6 of 19 cars cross the finish line at the checkered flag. Early on it was heat race winners Dallas Pickeheimer and Matthew Love running 1st and 2nd but by lap 6 Spensor Watson had charged to the front from his 16th starting position and was challenging for the lead. At the halfway point a multi- car incident in the front of the field would end Watson’s night and send Pickelheimer to the work area with a flat tire forcing him to restart from the tail. The beneficiary of the madness was BJ Branham of Maysville Kentucky who was running 3rd at the time of the pile-up and was able to stay on the track and take over the lead for the last half of the race to bring home his 2nd feature win of the season at MRP. Pickelheimer would charge from the tail after the restart to take 2nd. Johnny Jump finished 3rd in his Sport Modified debut with Matt Hundley and Alana Weis rounding out the top 5. The Matt’s Graphics UMP modifieds would take the track next and it was a familiar sight for the fans at MRP with the winner of all 3 events thus far in 2017, Batavia Ohio’s Adam Stricker, out front once again winning his heat to start on the pole for the main event. Heat 2 winner Maysville Kentucky driver Jimmy Lennex would lead the first lap but Stricker would overtake him and put the Stricker Auto Parts #68 up against the wall to set a blistering pace for the field. Defending track champion John “Weasel” Rhoades would move to 2nd 3 laps in and keep the pressure on Stricker. On lap 8 Stricker scraped the wall and lost momentum and the wily veteran was there to take advantage overtaking him for the lead. Stricker would stay in pursuit but was unable to get back up front before dropping from the race with 5 to go. Rhoades would claim his 1st win of the season in the Bicycle Playing Cards, Mike Conn Racing #59 machine with Lennex taking 2nd and Caleb “Boog” Verdon, Steve Clemons, and Larry Pickelheimer Jr. rounding out the top 5. The Cohen Recycling Crazy Compact division would be the last class on the track with heat race winners Devin Puckett and Josh Lambert starting on the front row but it was compact veteran Justin Dalton jumping out front to lead on the 1st lap from his 3rd starting position. But just as quickly as he got out front Dalton was gone having problems and exiting the track. This would send “The Devil” Devin Puckett to the lead and the young man would not waste the opportunity as he held off pressure from Brandon Stephens and Josh Hammond to claim his FIRST EVER feature win in the Puckett’s Tire & Lube #13 machine. Chris Vance and Lambert would complete the top 5. Moler Raceway Park will be closed 7-21. 7-22-17 Kenny Wallace’s Dirt Racing Experience www.dirtracewithkenny.com .
