Sunoco Race Fuels Night at MRP
5-3-13 - Williamsburg, OH
- L&M Performance presented Sunoco Fuels night
kicking off the month of May at MRP. While the car
count may have been down the quality of cars was
high in the late model division. In heat race action
it was Edinburgh, Indiana’s Chad Stapleton and
Batavia, Ohio’s Tim Carpenter claiming heat race
wins (Carpenter’s first ever late model win).
Following heat races the evening would turn somber
as defending and 5-time track champion Barry Doss
would suffer some medical issues and had to be taken
by ambulance to the local hospital after falling
ill. With the drivers' approval and everyone's
prayers the races continued. And in the $1,500
to win main event it was Stapleton out front in his
Barry Wright Racecars, Jay Dicken’s Engines, Right
Way Construction sponsored machine. It would
take about ten laps but Duane Chamberlain would work
his way through the field to the second spot and
would close the gap on the leader but even with a
lap 22 restart was unable to seriously challenge
Stapleton for the win. It was Stapleton’s second
consecutive win at MRP. Chamberlain would come home
second with Dillon White, Mark Frazier, and Ethan
Burgess rounding out the top five positions.
In the UMP Modifieds it
was more of the same as Columbus, Indiana’s Devin
Gilpin would continue his winning ways en-route to
his 3rd consecutive feature win in his
Impressive Racecars, Mike Shell Race Engines,
Blondies Pizzaria, DASCO Race Supply sponsored
machine. Behind Gilpin at the finish was Brad Weick
who passed Jeremie Bretz on the final lap for the
second position. Larry Pickelheimer Jr and Jeremy
Scott would round out the top five spots. Gilpin and
Bretz won heat races.
A field of 18 Crazy
Compacts took the green flag for the start of the
feature and it was Jerry Gibson III out front with
Michael Gemmer in pursuit. While the two leaders had
things under control out front there was exciting
racing behind them as the next 7 cars battled
side-by-side for most of the race. In the end it was
Willie Butler separating from the pack but unable to
pressure the two leaders. At the finish line it
would be Gibson III taking his first win of 2013
with Gemmer, Butler, Justin Dalton, and Tim Martin
rounding out the top five spots.
17 Chevettes would take
the green in the feature event with heat race
winners Alana Weis and Boog Verdon bringing the
field to the green. By the end of lap one it was
Rusty Yarger from 5th place to the lead.
Things would settle down from there as Yarger would
lead by about 5 car lengths as Verdon, Steven
Pursley, Josh Francis, and Mitchell Fields would all
battle for control of second position. While the
pack traded control of second spot throughout the
feature it would be Yarger taking his second win of
2013 in his Northwest Transmission, Wilson Body Shop
sponsored machine. Pursley would come home second
with Francis, Fields, and Miles Tarvin rounding out
the top five positions.
MRP would like to Thank
Al Carrier and the entire MRP Safety Crew as well as
the First Care Ambulance crew for their great work
in helping Barry Doss at the race track during his
medical emergency. Best wishes and prayers for a
speedy recovery are with Barry Doss and his entire
family during this time of need.
Our thoughts and
Prayers go out to Barry "The Boss" Doss and all his family, and racing
family!! And thanks to everyone for all the thoughts and prayers, he
is still with us. Thanks to everyone from our wonderful safety team to
his racing family, our announcer, race director, and all his racing
fans that got us through the night last night in Honor of Barry.
Thoughts and prayers to all of our racing family. We are glad he's
still with us and we want "The Boss" back!!! Love to all.
Fan Appreciation
Night a Success at MRP!! by Thomas Moler
4-26-13- Williamsburg, OH - Moler Raceway Park
held their first Fan Appreciation Night of the
season Friday with reduced or free admission prices
and a chance for fans to meet their favorite
drivers, look at the cars, get autographs and lots
of giveaways during intermission. After being rained
out the past two weeks fans and drivers alike were
eager for some spring racing action and the ¼ mile
speed plant would not disappoint. With April showers
providing plenty of moisture and some help from the
MRP track crew the racing surface would stay
extremely smooth and fast throughout the evening
providing plenty of excitement.
The
Chevettes would be the featured class and kick
things off with two heat races to determine the
starting lineup for the feature event. With extra
money on the line the local drivers were battling
harder than ever with West Union’s Josh Francis
taking the win over Georgetown’s Miles Tarvin in
heat 1 and Hillsboro’s Rusty Yarger winning heat 2
over Caleb “Boog” Verdon of Williamsburg. In the
feature Yarger would jump to the lead and never look
back leading all 20 laps and lapping all but the top
five cars en route to his first victory of the young
season. Those cars on the lead lap would put on
quite a show battling for the second through fifth
positions and when the smoke cleared it was Verdon
coming home second followed by Francis, Tarvin, and
Steve Pursely.
In the Late Model division it
was two familiar faces claiming wins in heat race
action with Barry Doss and John Whitney Jr. taking
the checkers. It the feature it was Chad Stapleton
who found the tacky track to his liking jumping to
the lead by lap two and quickly putting a sizable
lead between himself and Doss. Doss and Whitney
would battle for second for the next fifteen laps
but as lapped traffic came into play Whitney was
able to take control. After clearing the last lapped
car with five laps to go Whitney began reeling in
Stapleton who had a straightaway lead. As the two
cars roared around turn four door to door racing
towards the checkers it was Stapleton at the line,
surviving Whitney’s furious rally to win by a nose.
Doss, Mark Frazier, and Kellen Kenneda would round
out the top five.
It was another strong field
of cars in the UMP Modified division with twenty one
cars on hand to do battle. Heat one would go to
Brandon Ramsey with UMP national champion Devin
Gilpin coming from the tail to take heat two and
Dave “Fireball” Pinkerton claiming the victory in
heat three. With the feature lineup set it was “Kid
Dasco” Devin Gilpin on the pole and he would jump to
an early lead and never look back making it two for
two in the UMP Modifieds at MRP so far this season
in his Impressive Race Cars, Dasco Race Supply, Mike
Shell Racing Engines machine. Behind Gilpin the
racing was fast and furious with Joey “Rocketman”
Kramer coming all the way from fifteenth starting
position to finish second, John “Weasel” Rhoades
third (from eighth), Larry Pickelheimer Jr. fourth
(from eleventh), and Pinkerton making up the top
five.
The Crazy Compacts would close out the
evening and as usual would put on a great show for
the fans. Jerry Gibson III would win the first heat
to place himself on the pole for the feature but
mechanical issues would keep him in the pits handing
the pole to Willie Butler. Butler would take
advantage getting an early lead but was under
pressure throughout as heat two winner Michael
Gemmer, Justin Dalton, and Kevin Stamper would
battle it out for second but no one would be able to
catch “King” Willie as he would claim his second
straight feature at MRP in his Bressler’s U Pull &
Save, Decal Designs sponsored machine. Dalton,
Stamper, Gemmer, and Tim Martin would make up the
top five. Next week May 3rd L&M

Doorbuster 2013 a Rousing Success at Moler
Raceway Park!!
4-5-13 - Williamsburg, OH - The DRC.net Defrost 40
at Moler Raceway Park turned out to be one of the
most exciting features for late models that the ¼
mile speedway has ever seen. Bringing the field to
the green flag was heat race winners John Whitney
and Barry Doss with Whitney taking the early lead in
his Stephan’s Heating and Cooling, Amaze-A-Stitch
Embroidery sponsored machine. The battle behind him
was exciting as Doss and Duane Chamberlain battled
tightly for the first 14 laps before Chamberlain
would make contact and lose 4 spots. The guy on the
move was defending UMP National Modified Champion
(but only his 3rd night in LM) Devin Gilpin who
started in 8th position. Whitney had things in
control until lap 23 when he bobbled slightly off of
turn 2 and Doss was able to drive under him and take
the lead with Gilpin also able to slide by on the
next lap. On lap 30 Gilpin looked under Doss but got
sideways and lost ground to the leader.
At that time both Gilpin and Whitney went to the
high side of racetrack and a furious 3-way battle
ensued. With 6 laps remaining Gilpin was able to
pass Doss for the lead but the two remained
side-by-side for the next 3 laps as Whitney was
looking for either driver to slip. With 3 laps to go
Whitney inched ahead of Doss for second and actually
looked outside of Gilpin with 1 to go but to no
avail as the Columbus, Indiana driver was able to
win his first ever Late Model feature event driving
the JP Motorsports, Morgan Auto, Pickers Paradise,
Blondies Pizzareia, Landrum Springs sponsored
machine. Whitney would come home second with Doss,
Ethan Burgess, and Jeff Arnold rounding out the top
five spots.
In the UMP Modified division the question was
whether or not Devin Gilpin could pull off the
double and win both LM and Mod feature on the night.
After winning heat race #1 from fourth starting spot
he started on the pole of the 20 lap feature event
in his A-1 Pallet, Dasco Race Supply, Mike Shell
Race Engines, Impressive Racecars sponsored machine.
At the drop of the green Dave McWilliams would
challenge in his Reaper Race Car sponsored by
Slicker Graphics but would be no match on this night
as the youngster from Indiana would take home the
checkers in both divisions on this night. McWilliams
would maintain second spot throughout the event
while Todd Robinson, Jeremie Bretz, and Ryan Morton
would finish in the top five spots.
In the Chevette Division it was looking like a
replay of so many nights from 2012 with defending
track champion Rusty Yarger out front from the
beginning of the night but with 2 laps to go 13 yr
old Boog Verdon would manage to get to the high side
of Yarger and inch ahead and claim his first ever
feature event in his Miller Heating and Cooling,
Gingerbread House, Embroidery by Valerie sponsored
machine. Despite initial excitement the soft spoken
youngster was speechless in victory lane and very
thankful to Yarger for all the assistance in
teaching him to become a better racer. Yarger would
come home second with Josh Francis, Mike Clark, and
Kyle Tarvin rounding out the top five spots.
In the final race of the night it was TheDRC Crazy
Compact division and it was the two heat race
winners Michael Gemmer and Willie Butler starting up
front and setting the stage for the 15 lap race.
Despite missing a shift on the start and allowing
Justin Dalton to get past and challenge Gemmer for
the top spot it was Butler who would pass Gemmer and
take the lead on lap five. Gemmer would not let him
get away and it was a two-car battle for top spot up
front but a great race behind them. In the end it
was “King” Willie Butler taking the win over Gemmer
with Tim Schumacher, Jesse Mick, and Richard Dalton
rounding out the top five spots.
